A
patient with renal colic was prescribed Nux vomica, Lycopodium,
Belladonna and Berberis in rapid succession, each remedy only
giving a few minutes relief. Arsenicum album then gave a few
days relief before return of the pain, with the patient weakening
each day. The symptoms of the patient were then studied in
detail, after which sepia was given. The pain disappeared
and the patient passed some calculi in her urine. During a
discussion on this case Dr.J.T.Kent said that spasms from
stones in the ureter cause the pain, and that the remedy that
fits the constitution has a tendency to prevent the manufacture
of more stones and to relieve the spasm. After the remedy
there may be an outpouring of stones. Often Belladonna is
indicated, he said, it is not deep enough for the patient
but it is complemented frequently by Calcarea carbonica or
phosphorica when the picture is of Belladonna. Natrum sulphuricum
will often fit the constitution an relieve the acute trouble.
