DRUG PROVING RESEARCH

Drug Proving now termed as Homoeopathic Pathogenetic Trials (HPT) is a process in which drug substances are put into trial over healthy human volunteers and their pathogenetic effects are observed, noted and compiled as the first step to introduce the drug in the Materia Medica. Proving of a drug substance is a unique process in Homoeopathy. Unlike conventional medicine where animal experimentation forms the basis of evaluation of drug pathogenesis, homoeopathic medicines are proved on healthy human volunteers, including controls, from both sexes. The Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy since its inception in 1974, has adopted the Drug Proving Program as one of its primary research areas. The Council has focused on proving of indigenous drugs and also fragmentarily proved drugs. It is a double-blind, randomized, multicentric study and is being conducted at following centers viz.

Central Research Institute (H), NOIDA (UP)

2.      Central Research Institute (H), Kottayam (Kerala)

3.      DAC Regional Research Institute (H), Kolkata (WB)

4.      Homoeopathic Drug Research Institute, Lucknow (UP)

5.      Regional Research Institute (H), Navi Mumbai ( Maharashtra)

DRUG PROVING PROTOCOL
CURRENT STATUS

During the year 201314, the Council has proved 5 drugs at its different drug proving centres. In the current financial year 2014-15, it has been decided that another five drugs will be taken up for proving. The proving data of 12 proved drugs has been compiled and will be submitted for approval of the Special Committee of Drug Proving for publication in the form of Drug Proving Volume 6.

Special Committee of Drug Proving decided to take up proving of 15 new indigenous/ fragmentarily proved drugs in coming years. Council will also undertake homoeopathic proving of allopathic drugs whose therapeutic indications and toxic effects are well known. The Council endeavors to improve the Drug Proving Programme and in pursuit of the same, protocols adopted by the international organizations are being considered and interactive meets with the experts in this field are being held from time to time.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The Council has proved 96 drugs till now, out of which 74 drugs are of plant origin, 08 are of animal origin and 14 are prepared from chemicals. Out of these 96 drugs, the Council has exclusively proved 19 drugs for the first time and re-proved the remaining drugs. 90 drugs have been published so far in the form of books and Drug Proving articles in CCRH Quarterly Bulletins & Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy.

                                              PUBLICATIONS

Six books that have been published by the Council on Drug Proving are:

1. Homoeopathic Drug Provings conducted by CCRH (38 drugs)

2. Homoeopathic Drug Provings conducted by CCRH Volume-2 (10 drugs)

3.  Homoeopathic Drug Provings conducted by CCRH Volume-3 (8 drugs)

4. Homoeopathic Drug Provings conducted by CCRH Volume-4 (10 drugs)

5. Homoeopathic Drug Provings conducted by CCRH Volume-5 (10 drugs)

6. New Drugs proved by CCRH (6 drugs)

Apart from the above mentioned publications, 19 Drug monographs have also been published containing details of the proving symptoms found during drug proving.
