| Abstract |
|
One
in every ten children in Britain suffers from asthma, compared
to 3% of the adult population. Homoeopathic treatment is usually
constitutional and the authors stress that patients taking homoeopathic
remedies must not come off their conventional drugs until they
are completely better and have the consent of their GP or hospital
consultant. The authors treat many patients with hypnotherapy
as well as homoeopathy, in order to help them relax and control
the asthma attack. They often use the bowel nosode Sycotic Co
in the treatment of asthma. Four cases are given. Two patients
improved after Thuja, given because it was suspected that their
asthma started after being given vaccinations. A student improved
when given Calcarea carbonica as a constitutional remedy. She
was slow, fat and flabby. Sycotic Co was also given at the second
interview as her eczema and asthma had improved but her sinus
trouble had not. This did clear the sinus problem.

| Abstract |

Dr
Blackie has treated at least sixty cases of asthma with varying
success over the years and here she discusses a series of
cases divided into children, adults with a family history
and adults without a family history. Among the children's
cases is a seven year old girl with a history of bronchitis
since infancy and asthma since the age of five. She was initially
proscribed Tuberculinum bovinum 200 on which she improved
for four months but subsequently her condition worsened and
repeat prescriptions of the remedy were not effective, however
Spongia tosta 6 was administered in 6 doses at two-hourly
intervals and helped to keep wheezing at night in check. Over
the next two years, Arsenicum album, Carbo vegetabilis, Sambucus,
Ipecacuanha, and Antimonium tartaricum were prescribed with
varying success but the patient had still not overcome her
asthma to a degree which would be regarded as successful.
Then, after a particularly bad attack, Natrum sulphuricum
10M was prescribed on the basis of the symptoms of breathlessness,
holding on to her chest at intervals and sensation of a lack
of air in the chest, and this prescription was very effective,
giving almost complete relief for two winters. Dr Blackie
discusses a further three cases of children who were treated
with Tuberculinum bovinum, Psorinum, Thuja occidentalis, Pulsatilla,
Sambucus and Phosphoric acid. She goes on to discuss adults
with a family history of asthma for whom Kalium sulphuratum
and Carbo vegetabilis were effective, and adults without any
family history or any allergic condition for whom Phosphorus
and Cactus grandiflorus worked well.

| Abstract |

Dr
Bodman discusses in detail three remedies which he has found
to be useful in the treatment of asthma - Ipecacuanha, Phosphorus
and Pulsatilla - and refers to some of the masters of homoeopathy
in describing their drug pictures. He describes Ipecacuanha
as the remedy for the attack of sudden onset - the Type I
of hypersensitivity in asthma, whereas Phosphorus is related
to Type III hypersensitivity where the reaction is delayed.
The author has used Pulsatilla in acute attacks as well as
as a constitutional remedy during the intervals between attacks.
He illustrates Pulsatilla's wide range of action by relating
the case of a patient who developed asthma after using a washing
powder and was cured by Pulsatilla 30. A similar outbreak
of asthma among the workers of a washing powder factory had
been investigated and the asthma was shown to be of both the
immediate and delayed hypersensitivity types.
