Abstract
Aims: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of a group of homeopathic medicines in children with acute rhinitis.
Materials and methods: In this multi-centric open clinical trial, a total of 784 children (408 males; 384 females)
aged 6 months to 15 years, presenting symptoms of acute rhinitis were enrolled from 7 Institutes/ Units under the
Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (India). Symptoms were assessed using an acute rhinitis symptom score
(ARSS). A total of 13 homeopathic medicines were shortlisted after repertorizing the nosological symptoms of
acute rhinitis in children and the results were analyzed. The medicines were prescribed in dilution 6c (10-12)
and doses were repeated from few minutes to few hours as per the need of the case. Appearance of any change
(improvement or worsening) was followed by placebo / change in dilution or change in medicine according to the
response of the patient. The follow up period was up to the 7th day of illness.
Results: Out of 784 children enrolled, 638 children were followed up and analyzed. A significant change in the
score from the baseline (p<0.05) was observed. Twelve medicines were found to be useful in 638 children suffering
from acute rhinitis and among them Nux-v (n=109), Merc (n=106) and Bell (n=88) were the most useful.
No complications were observed during the treatment. Adverse events in the form of hyperpyrexia were observed
in 2 children only.
Conclusion: This study indicates the usefulness of homeopathic medicines in the management of acute rhinitis of
children; controlled studies are needed to investigate their efficacy and effectiveness.

ABSTRACT Background & objectives
Acute diarrheal disease is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in developing countries.
No data regarding the pediatric population suffering from acute diarrhea seeking homoeopathic treatment
in India are available. Therefore, an observational study on acute diarrheal diseases in children was
undertaken with 14 predefined trial homoeopathic medicines to arrive at a group of useful homeopathic
medicines for the treatment of acute childhood diarrhea.
Methods
A prospective, multi-centre observational study was conducted by Central Council for Research in
Homeopathy at its various Institutes and Units throughout India during Oct. 2005- Sept. 2008.
A total of three hundred twenty seven children in the age-group 6 months to 12 years were included.
Trial medicines selected on the principles of Homeopathy were prescribed and the diarrhea index score
was assessed before and after treatment using SPSS (version 16).
Results
The difference in the mean number of stools and diarrhea index score was found to be statistically
significant (p=0.000, <0.05) after the prescription of trial homoeopathic medicines in 321 children.
The diarrhea index score got either worsened or remained unchanged from the baseline score in 6 (1.83%) children.
Of the 14 medicines half of them viz.,Podophyllum peltatum (n=158), Chamomilla (n=49), Aethusa cynapium (n=25),
Mercurius solubilis (n=23), Calcarea carbonica (n=21), Sulphur (n=18), and Phosphorus (n=17) were found to be most useful among the 14 predefined trial medicines.
Conclusion
This was an observational study with positive results leads to further validation by suitable Randomized
Control Trial(s).

Abstract
Objective:
Furuncules (boils) are a more florid form of folliculitis affecting the face, neck, buttocks and axillae.
The present observational study on furunculosis was undertaken with nine predefined trial medicines to arrive
at a group of useful homeopathic medicines for the treatment of furunculosis.
Methods:
A prospective, multicentre observational study was conducted by Central Council for Research in
Homeopathy at its various Institutes and Units in India during October 2005- September 2008. Five hundred
and thirty nine patients of all age groups presenting with symptoms of furunculosis were included in the study
but 397 patients were regularly followed up. Predefined trial medicines were given as per individualization on
holistic principles of Homeopathy. A furunculosis symptom score (FSS) was designed to assess the severity of
illness and the data was analyzed using SPSS version 16.
Results:
There was significant difference in the mean total FSS between baseline and end of the treatment
favoring homeopathic care (p=0.000 <0.05, CI: 4.25-4.67). Eighty five percent (n=338) of the patient population
needed the following nine trial medicines: Hepar sulphuris (n=112), Antimonium crudum (n=103), Sulphur (n=69) and
Calcarea carbonica (n=54). The results were found to be statistically significant (p <0.05) with the nine
predefined trial medicines.
Conclusion: This multicentre observational study reproves the usefulness of homeopathic medicines in furunculosis.
Controlled study should be undertaken to further support the efficacy and effectiveness of homeopathic medicines
in the treatment of furunculosis
